EUNICE SATCHELL AMES, the beloved daughter of the late Sarah Turner Satchell and Leon Satchell was born December 14, 1928 in Accomack County, Virginia.
Eunice received her education in the Accomack County School System. She attended the Craddockville Elementary and the Mary Nottingham Smith High Schools.
Eunice felt the need for a “higher power” in her life and was converted, baptized and joined the fellowship of the Shiloh Baptist Church, Boston, Virginia under the pastorate of the late S. A. Harrington. During her youth, Eunice served on the Usher’s Ministry. She loved her church for she participated in any way she could, whether it was making sure that she and her children gave monetarily or she would cook one of her specialties, “Eunice’s Rolls”, during Annual Church Events.
Eunice was joined in holy matrimony to the late Charles Edward Ames. This union brought forth eleven children that they loved and nurtured.
Eunice worked for a short period in her life at Holly Farms Poultry Plant, Inc. in Temperanceville, Virginia. She enjoyed working and made many friends while she was employed.
What manner of woman was Eunice? She was kind, witty, and jovial. She loved people especially her African American kinship. Eunice was proud of her African American heritage for she has numbers of photo albums of newspaper clippings and/or programs of African American people of whom she knew or did not know personally. She loved her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Her home became a safe haven for them to gather to laugh, share stories of old, and eat Ma’s good home cooking. Eunice had a grandson, Calvin Lee Ames, Jr. and a
great-granddaughter, T’Shira Ames both of whom predeceased her.
On early Tuesday morning, August 2, 2005 at 12:30 a.m. at her earthly home in Savageville, Virginia, God said, “Eunice it’s time to go to your heavenly home, you have finished your destiny path, now its time for you to rest from all the trials and tribulations that this life has brought.” We shall miss her greatly, but we bow in humble submission to an all wise God.
Eunice leaves to rejoice in her homegoing, and to share cherished loving memories: five sons, Charles Allen, Calvin Lee (Brenda) and Morris of Accomack County, Harold of Northampton County, and Stevie (Susie) of Tennessee; six daughters, Centoria Smith (Willie) and Valery Davis (Walter) of Philadelphia, PA, Gail Clay(Joseph) of San Diego, California, Sarah Reed (Craig) of Chesapeake, VA, Teresa Sample (James) and Charlene Ames (Mark) of Accomack County; fifty one grandchildren; seventy one great-grandchildren; two sisters, Olivia Gamble and Alfreda Myers of Philadelphia, PA; one brother George Joynes (Mary) of Philadelphia, PA; one aunt, Emo Satchell of Philadelphia PA; one uncle James Murphy (Vastine) of Philadelphia, PA; five sisters-in-law, Doretha Ashby (Welton), Frances Mae Washington, Sarah Ann Ames, Shirley Bolden of Accomack County and Gladys Ames of Baltimore, MD; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, six adopted sons Tony Collins, Arthur Clifford, Gerald Clifford, John C., Big Mike, and Lewis; five adopted daughters Valerie Clifford, Ovela Clifford, Barbara Wilkes, Luvenia Watkins, and Shelia Mckissack; other relatives, five special friends Maggie Smith, Maggie Finney, Elizabeth (Pat) Giddens, Wilma Mae Kellam, and Rennie Stevens, other friends, and the entire Savageville Community.

There are many things in life
We can not understand
But we must trust God’s judgment
And be guided by His hand,
And all who have God’s blessing
Can rest safely in His care
For He promises “safe passage”
On the “Wings of Faith and Prayer.”
