O b i t u a r y

ROLAND PRENTIS BAILEY, SR., son of Harold and Waivey Kellam Bailey, was born December 29, 1921 in Accomack, Virginia.  He departed this life, Thursday, November 24, 2005 in the Shore Memorial Hospital, Nassawadox, Virginia.

Roland received his education in the public schools of Accomack County, Virginia.  In 1942, he enlisted into the United States Army, where he received training in Automotive Mechanics and became a Mechanic Specialist.  Roland was awarded the Good Conduct Medal, European Theater Medal, Combat Infantry Badge and World War II Medal for his military service.  He received an honorable discharge in 1945.  Roland was a member of the American Legion Post #400 and a past member of the Masonic Lodge.

In 1958, Roland opened Bailey’s Texaco Service Station.  There he used the training that he received in the maintenance and repair of motor vehicles to build a successful family business.  He had a true entrepreneurial spirit and always looked for new ways to accomplish tasks.  Roland loved the work that he did and nurtured his business for over 40 years.

In 1944, he met and was united in Holy Matrimony to Anna Grace Doughty and from this union; Brenda Bailey White and Roland Prentis Bailey, Jr. were born.  Anna and Roland also raised a nephew, James Bailey as their son.  They enjoyed 61 years of marriage.  He was an active member of Ebenezer Baptist Church where he served as the President of the Senior Usher Ministry and was a member of the Trustee Board.  In addition to his passion for automobiles, Roland enjoyed traveling, designing and building, and spending time with his family.  Roland had a giving heart and a great appreciation for hard work.

Roland was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend.  He was predeceased by a son, Raymond Lee Bailey.  Roland leaves to cherish his memory:  his wife Anna, his daughter, Brenda and son, Roland; his daughters-in-Law, Sharone and Anne; his son-in-law, Marvin; his sisters, Jane, Adelaide and Catherine; his brother, Willie; his aunt, Lillian, six grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; two brothers-in-Law; five sisters-in-law; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
