MARY SMITH BURTON the daughter of the late George Smith and Carrie Louise Custis, was born in Northampton County, Virginia December 10, 1928. She was reared and attended the public school in the area of her birth. Mary (“G-Mom”) accepted Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior at an early age, and joined Bethel A.M.E. Church, Eastville, Virginia where she served as a faithful member on the Senior Usher Board until her health failed. She was a member of the Missionary. She was joined in Holy Matrimony to the late Edward Earl Burton and together they raised eight children. Mary loved attending Vacation Bible School, Revivals, and Young Voices For Better Choices programs. She enjoyed her children, preparing a home for them, and loved sewing and cooking. She leaves to cherish her memories: three sons, Edward Lee Smith of Philadelphia, PA., Clifton Burton (Cynthia), and William Burton of Eastville, VA.; four daughters, Annette Holmes (Angelo) of Nassawadox, VA., Carrie Sisco of Gargatha, VA., Doretha Savage (Gene) of Exmore, VA., and Mary Shariene Burton of Eastville; daughter-in-law, Donna Fay Smith of Norfolk, VA; nineteen grandchildren; sixteen great grandchildren; three sisters, Maggie Stevens, Warfield Fisher and Ada Mae Satchell of Eastville, VA.; four sisters-in-law, Ellen Rowley, Ida Lane, Lois Moore and Evelyn Burton of Northampton County; two brothers-in-law, Oscar Burton of Philadelphia and Maxwell Satchell of Northampton; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives and friends; two special friends of the family, George Taylor and Tina Fisher.
