OBITUARY
CATHERINE BAKER SMITH, the daughter of the late Rev. John Baker and Dora Reynolds Baker, was born February 9, 1921 in Halifax, North Carolina.
Her very early years were spent in the area of her birth and at the age of six years she moved, with her parents, to Portsmouth, Virginia and was educated in the public school system of Portsmouth. They later relocated to the Eastern Shore of Virginia and settled in lower Northampton County.  While still young, she joined Gospel Tabernacle in Cape Charles, Virginia.  She later joined Union Baptist Church, Eastville, Virginia and remained there until she found the inner need and desire to change her membership once again and joined Holy Unity Commandment Church of God Seventh Day, Treherneville, Virginia where she served as the church mother, and was a loyal and dedicated member until her health began to fail.
At the age of sixteen, Catherine met and married the late Elwood Smith, Sr. and their union was blessed with six children.  She remained a loving, caring and devoted mother until her life expired Thursday, June 13, 2002 at her residence in Machipongo, Virginia.
She leaves to cherish many memories: four sons, Elwood Smith, Jr. and James Smith, Philadelphia, PA., Leroy Smith, Eastville, VA. and Harry Smith, Tacoma, WA.; two daughters, Joyce Nottingham, Eastville, VA. and Frances Thomas, Camden, N.J.; three daughters-in-law, Diane, Ruby and Dorothy; two sons-in-law, Frederick and Alexander; fifteen grandchildren; twenty-one great grandchildren; two sisters-in-law, Clara Coston and Mamie Morris; three brothers-in-law, Cleveland Smith, Clifton Smith and Alex Smith; her church family at Holy Unity, and a host of other relatives and friends

Perhaps you sent a lovely card or sat quietly in a chair.
Perhaps you sent a floral spray if so, we saw it there.
Perhaps you spoke the kindest words, as any friend would say.
Perhaps you were not there at all, just thought of us each day.
What ever you did to console our hearts,
We thank you so much, whatever the part.
May God bless each of you.
