THEODORE ROOSEVELT TOWNSEND, Sr. son of the late Isaac E. Townsend and Simarymus V. Clayton Townsend was born November 12, 1933 in Northampton County, Virginia. He was also known in his community and by family and friends as “Slim” and “Captain D”. He departed this life Sunday, August 21, 2005 at the Shore Memorial Hospital, Nassawadox, Virginia. He received his education in the Northampton County Public School System and graduated from the Northampton County High School in 1950. While attending Treherneville Elementary School he skipped one grade allowing him to graduate ahead of his class. After graduating high school he attended State University of New York at Farmingdale, University of Maryland, College Park, MD and Massey Ferguson Training Academy in York, PA. Roosevelt was a man of many occupations. He was formerly employed by the following: Bayshore Concrete; Welder for the construction of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel; VDOT road construction; Massey Ferguson as Tractor Mechanic and Welder; and self employment. In 1952, he was united in Holy Matrimony to Bertha T. Warren and from this union five children were born. He was a member of Mt. Zion A.M.E. Church, Treherneville, Virginia. He enjoyed sound conversation, hunting, farming and reading. Roosevelt had an outstanding personality. If you became his friend you were his friend for life. He was an educator and philosopher. Roosevelt’s favorite saying was, “If you don’t know, now you know, ‘cause I told you so.” He leaves to cherish his memory: his wife, Bertha T. Townsend; seven children, Loretta V. Townsend (Walter Smith) Craddockville, VA, Debra J. Wharton (Ricky) Temperanceville, VA, Theodore R. Townsend, Jr., Fayetteville, NC, Rosita E. Marshall, Norfolk, VA, I. Craig T. Townsend, Birdsnest, VA, Johnnie Hampton, Hampton, VA, and George Brooks, Cheriton, VA.; one sister, Eliza Townsend (Cosco Williams) Wyandanch, NY; eleven grandchildren; nine great grandchildren; one niece, Zondra Outlaw; one nephew, Charles Peters both of Wyandanch, NY, and a host of relatives and friends. He was predeceased by one son, Wayne T. Brisco, Sr. The Family |
